JANE KAVANAGH MORTON
Jane Kavanagh Morton studied ceramic art at Hood College in Maryland, but she has worked as an artist for 35 years, painting watercolors, doing drawings for greeting cards, and designing murals for interiors that include children’s rooms and nurseries. Jane’s work mimics the unpredictability of life. She creates spontaneous shapes with impulsive surface treatment. Some surfaces have a metallic look created by a variation of raku firing. Others are pit fired to gather the uncertainty of the flames. And some are simply glazed and fired in oxidation. After her pieces are finished, Jane plays with them trying to find a connection between the pieces to create a dialog, a story. Jane hopes these narratives summon an emotion, be it sadness, laughter, or merely a fleeting thought. Each piece contains a part of Jane but she knows they can stand on their own.
